Earlier this month, we had our glorious #InternationalWomensDay, during which the whole world (certain parts excluded or to a much lesser extent, unfortunately) celebrated the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of us women. Y A S S S S S, what a day...all eyes & spotlights on us!
The Tutu Shop as a brand, pink & proud, was conceived not only to dress all you delightfully charming foxes in stunning pieces of tulle straight from the closets of your favorite Disney princesses, but also -albeit a little more subtle- to promote sexy feminism. Now, now...don’t you worry, I’m not trying to get all ideological here ;-) we love the light & bright side of life, remember? But you should know that it’s there, that’s all.
That being said, I’m sure you wouldn’t mind if I dedicated this little page of our digital notepad to a small (there are soooo many!) number of truly Badass Boss Babes -some more well-known than others- who have been killing it in their respective fields of expertise. I hope they can be an inspiration to you. Because you can and will slay too if you step up, hustle and believe in whatever it is you want to achieve. Because every day should be International Women’s Day. Because you’re all tutu-wearing Queens (there’s only one Queen B, tho) to us <3
Marissa Mayer (USA - 42 years old)
Having worked at Google for 13 years as one of its very first employees / engineers, this self-made babe had already made quite the fortune when she took over as CEO of Yahoo in 2012. She was, however, unable to keep web traffic and ad revenues from falling. Verizon agreed to buy the once-dominating internet mogul for $4.48 billion. Marissa resigned as CEO of Yahoo in mid-June 2017 when the sale was completed and got a $23 million severance package out of it.
* gasp * what a baller chick!
Toni Ko (USA - 44 years old)
At age 25, with $250,000 in seed money from her parents, this Korean-born college dropout started affordable beauty brand NYX Cosmetics.
Ok, so she got a “little head start”...the following numbers are still impressive as f***: L'Oreal bought NYX Cosmetics in a deal worth $500 million in 2014. Being unable to sit still, Ko then launched kooky, cool sunglass company Perverse in 2016.
She's also been investing in commercial real estate in her home state of California since selling her company.
So, kids, don’t stay in school - get mad money from your parents - hustle hard - sell it for a fortune - repeat.
Jaha Dukureh (Gambia - 28 years old)
Safe Hands for Girls
This fierce Gambian activist babe is a leader in the fight to end female genital mutilation, a practice that affects more than 200 million girls worldwide. Jaha herself was cut in Gambia when she was just about a week old. At 15, she was sent to the United States to marry a much older and unknown man. When she got married, she learned that she had been subjected to the most extreme form of genital mutilation: her clitoris and labia had been removed, and her vagina had been stitched shut with only a small hole for urination and menstruation. Now remarried and the mother of three, she’s leading a movement to end female genital mutilation worldwide, and raising awareness about the the practice in the United States: after her Change.org petition got more than 220,000 signers, the Obama administration announced it would commission a report to study the problem.
It doesn't always have to be about making money...changing lives makes you a badass boss as well! BOW DOWN!
Priyanka Chopra (India - 35 years old)
Actress, Producer, Founder
Purple Pebble Pictures / The Priyanka Chopra Foundation for Health & Education
Priyanka, a gorgeous Indian babe, is arguably the most successful Bollywood actress to cross over to Hollywood. She began her acting career in 2003, and has since appeared in more than 40 Bollywood films, making her U.S. big-screen debut in 2017's Baywatch. As the star of ABC's Quantico, she's one of TV's highest-earning actresses and the first Indian actor to lead a drama series on American television. As a producer, Priyanka founded Mumbai-based Purple Pebble Pictures, which strives to promote regional filmmakers and up-and-coming Indian talent. Passionate about protecting children's rights, she's a global UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and United Nations Foundation Girl Up Champion, and her nonprofit The Priyanka Chopra Foundation for Health and Education provides schooling and medical care.
Lights, camera, action! This Queen can’t be taken out of the spotlight!
Pei Guo (China - 51 years old)
This badass boss babe worked her way to the top and is now one of China’s most daring and prolific fashion designers. She has literally taken the international fashion scene by storm. Known for fantastical designs inspired by the Chinese Imperial Court, Pei designed among others Rihanna’s famous fur-lined yellow gown with the enormous train from the 2015 Met Gala. Despite her massive following in China, Pei had not shown her work in a major fashion show until January 2016, when she debuted at Paris Fashion Week. Growing up in an extremely unsupportive communist environment, it was inconceivable to Pei that she would one day run a world-class atelier and charge between $75,000 and $300,000 for one of her designs.
"I'll make my own fairy tale dresses, thank you very much!"
Ok, so if someone could hand us over their home addresses so we can send them free sample tutus...that would be great!
